Embracing and sharing accessibility for #GAAD

"By sharing what we learn from our one-to one, life-long assessment and support for physically disabled gamers, we can help many thousands of people right across the world, too.” - Dr Mick Donegan

Our specialist teams face different challenges almost every day creating bespoke adapted controller setups to match the specific abilities of individual disabled gamers. As a result every assessment represents a learning process, and it’s a privilege to be able to distil this accumulated experience and knowledge for sharing globally through our free accessibility resources like EyeMine, gameaccess.info and Eye Gaze Games. It’s also a privilege to be able to share our accessibility experience with developers to help make their games more accessible worldwide, and to collaborate with manufacturers like Microsoft in the creation of internationally-available products like the XAC.

But most of all it’s just a joy to see first-hand what a stunning impact this has for disabled gamers across the world. So many more people now have the opportunity to participate as equals in astonishingly rich competitive gaming environments and social communities, resulting in greater independence, self-esteem, confidence, achievement, and an opportunity to bring out the very best in themselves.

We’ve seen Kati in Finland and Lucinda in the UK playing chess together, just using their eyes. We’ve seen Keren in the US outsmarting our own CEO, we’ve seen Dong in China racing against his friends, and we’ve seen Becky mastering Minecraft just through gaze-control alone.

We’re proud to be just one of the many catalysts involved in turning awareness into this kind of impact, so this #GAAD (Global Accessibility Awareness Day) we offer our heartfelt thanks to all the individuals, developers, educators, communities and companies who are embracing accessibility and driving it forward - you’re truly making a life-changing difference.
