Zolly's catching up with his console games

Hey, all you GameBlasters! THIS is the kind of difference you’ll be making. It’s Zolly, who we welcomed to our games room last week.

Zolly’s been playing games since the mid-1980s (lucky man!) but a spinal injury means that although he’s got good movement in his arms and shoulders, he has difficulty moving his hands. He was was really keen to try out Red Dead Redemption 2.

“He’s found ways to play on PC,” said Joe, one of our specialist therapists, “but he wanted to try a console. He’s bought an Xbox One and an Xbox Adaptive Controller, and needed some help working out which peripherals would be best.”

The team discovered he can use the left stick and face buttons on a standard Xbox controller if it’s mounted at just the right angle. A medium-sized joystick seems to suit his right hand.

“Getting to the triggers was difficult,” said Joe. “So we mapped them to button switches over by his left hand, which he presses using wrist movement in his left arm - while still keeping his right hand on the joystick for aiming!”

We’re super-excited to be able to help Zolly take on the games he wants to play, and we’ll be tracking his progress and his need for any extra equipment as time go by.

Huge thanks to everyone for kick-starting Zolly’s console gaming journey!
