Virtual London Marathon - You did it!

The London Marathon has always had its fair share of memorable moments from record breakers to crazy costumes, but 2020 was perhaps the most surreal year of all. On Sunday, while the elite runners were taking part on the official route in London (cheered on only by cardboard cut-outs) everyone else, up and down the country – and abroad – were setting off from their own front doors to complete the 26.2 miles.

Despite the UK seeing particularly grim weather, this didn't put SpecialEffect’s runners off. All five of them – Ed Rumley, Andrew Pooley, Pete Morrish, David Farkas and Jaqueline Waitehouse – demonstrated amazing perseverance and spirit in making it to their finish lines.

All five runners were clear that their motivation in these difficult conditions came from a desire to support their chosen cause, as much as any personal ambition. Ed Rumley chose to set off early on Sunday morning with the aim of having breakfast on the sofa at 10am, which he successfully achieved:

“Mission accomplished! It was challenging but I’ve had so much incredible support from the industry and that generosity played on my mind for about half the run!”

The rain may not have dampened their spirits, but it made what was already a challenging event doubly so. Pete Morrish found his run a “toughie” despite his training runs having gone well. Like Ed, he opted for an early morning run to avoid the worst of the weather but running against the wind on his return leg wasn’t easy:

“...that last leg was absolutely hellish... eventually, the Marathon app buzzed and I was done – 3:54:37. Three minutes faster than my previous PB. Pretty chuffed, especially given the unique nature of this marathon! I might have had a little cry on the way home...”

Ed similarly found the weather the most challenging part of his run:

“At mile 5 I ran through a puddle that was deeper than my ankles shortly followed by a car that sped past and created a tsunami. In the last 4 miles I was struggling... but my running highlight was half a mile from home where my wife and two boys stood in the rain waiting for me and they ran the last bit home with me. In the absence of the crowds and Buckingham Palace, it was exactly what I needed to carry me home!”

Ed wasn’t the only runner to have support from his family despite the rain. When Andrew's iPhone malfunctioned mid-race, technical support came from none other than his seven year-old! Jacqueline was also met by her family while David’s sister joined him for the first half of his route before the rain got too much.

Perhaps the last three words from Pete best sums up the day for all involved:

“Thanks to all at SpecialEffect for your help and support! I'm super-pleased for the rest of the Marathon crew. We did it!”

Yes Pete, YOU DID! And really, it’s an ENORMOUS THANK YOU from us at SpecialEffect. We’re bowled over by how you all went above and beyond to complete this year’s London Marathon in such challenging conditions. You are ALL incredible and we hope you were able to dry off, put your feet up and celebrate what is a fantastic achievement.
