Tilling’s 1000km triumph

It’s fair to say that we’ve been blown away in recent weeks by the creativity and generosity of our supporters! With so many big events like the London Marathon, Rough Runner and the Twin Town Challenge being postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the emphasis has been on fundraising activities that people can take part in from home; whether that be quizzes, ‘virtual’ runs or charity livestreams.

Some of the most inventive ideas have come from the young people in our community, such as Holly from Witney who has been drawing portraits of family and friends in return for donations, or ten-year-old Max who organised an online gaming get-together with his friends in aid of SpecialEffect last week.

Two boys pointing at a list on a fridgeAnother great example of young people leading the way came last weekend in the form of brothers Noah (13) and Elliot (11), who between them rallied a virtual army of friends and family as part of a collective endurance challenge of their own design. Noah picks up the story, explaining how they first came up with the idea:

“I was thinking just how lucky I was to play with my friends online and socialise especially at the moment and I thought how hard it must be for people with physical disabilities. I spoke to Elliot about it and it was then we thought of the idea to do a 200km challenge which anyone could take part in whether they wanted to walk, run, cycle or ride in their wheelchair!”

Asked how they got so many people involved, Elliot adds: “We took some funny pictures of me and Noah on our bikes to try to get our friends excited and interested to join us in our fundraising event. Once we’d planned our event and set up our JustGiving page we started to message all our friends our funny picture and asked them if they also wanted to join in!”

Two boys and a man cyclingHaving gained the interest of their friends, on Saturday morning the boys set-out on their mountain bikes, accompanied by their dad, Rich, and two year-old Sister, Bea. The plan was to cover the route they would have usually taken on their daily exercise ride, but to ask for donations of 50p per km on this special occasion.

Meanwhile, their mum Sally, SpecialEffect ambassador and daughter of our CEO and Founder Dr Mick Donegan, also hit the streets, clocking-up 5km with her new baby son Donny in his pram! And Dr Mick himself was also inspired to join in, adding more kms to the total on his daily dog walk, making this challenge a truly family affair!

Having set out with a target of clocking up 200km between everyone involved, Noah and Elliot were stunned with the response, both in terms of the distance covered by everyone taking part and the donations raised as a result. As they explain:

“We thought that the distance and money that came out of the event was outstanding since we set our target at 200km and ended up covering over 1100km! We also smashed our fundraising target and were so pleased so many of our friends helped us! It was a real team effort!”

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Noah and Elliot for their tremendous support, as well as all the other family and friends involved. Together they’ve now raised over £900, as well as generating a lot of awareness and goodwill amongst their community. Their JustGiving page is still open if you would like to show your support!

And if you've been inspired by their story and want to take part in a ‘virtual challenge’ yourself, you can find more information here.
