Thumbs up for James

This kind of detail matters. If your thumb slips off your joystick you don’t think twice, but for James, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, it’s a game changer.

We’d helped James a couple of years ago with an adapted PS4 controller, but he got in touch recently about the problem. Frankie and Joe went to see if they could help.

“His thumb kept slipping off the right stick,” said Joe. “It was really affecting his gaming.”

So this time around James tried a PS4 controller with low force sticks – a modification we weren’t able to do to PS4 controllers the last time we saw him. We basically swap out the springs underneath the sticks for lighter ones, so they’re easier to move about. This in itself really helped and, with the extra addition of a grip, his thumb stayed in place.

James was also having difficulties with the R2 and the PS button, so the team wired in a extra couple of small switches to the others we’d previously added to his controller.

It’s all small details, but vital ones to fix so that James can bring his gaming back up to speed.

“We left him fighting for survival in Days Gone,” smiled Joe.

Nice one, James, enjoy the action!
