Our picture of the year

Seemed like a good idea at the time, trying to find a picture that summed up an extraordinary year for SpecialEffect.

So many contenders. It's the fabulous people that we've worked with who've provided many of the real highlights and some memorable images. There's a lad from London who contracted a virus on his spine that left him almost totally paralysed. The look on his face when he realised he could control Dirt3 using an eye-controlled computer was way beyond priceless. And there were plenty of brilliant moments that didn't get captured on camera, like the call from a thoroughly disgruntled Dad - we'd helped his son, who has cerebral palsy, to have full control of his console and he'd just beaten his father for the first time ever on FIFA!

Then there have been images from fundraising efforts that have just blown us away. Fantastic to see so many wonderful people from the games industry running the British 10K for us (see you next year!), and the bonkers range of things people have been sponsored for - zumbathons, kettlebells, baths of baked beans. You name it, you've done it. We've got the pictures.

But in the end we chose this image of ten year-old Mina powering into her sponsored scooter ride between the Boscombe and Bournemouth piers. She was aiming to raise £50 in sponsorship, but managed to secure over ten times that amount. At the time, the simplicity of the idea caught the imagination of all the team here, and this photo sums up perfectly just how much effort every single supporter has put into raising money this year to level the playing field for disabled gamers.

We can't wait to start helping more people in 2013. We'll be doing it from our new premises with ample car parking (at last!) and more space for our Games Room, where people can try out the specialised and adapted technology that we use to give a better quality of life. We've got a massive task to double the amount of money we need to cope with the increasing demand for services and loan kit, but we're up for the challenge, most recently boosted by the stunning London Games Festival Art Auction and the Real Marathon. Bring on 2013!
