Marathon men and auction heroes

This is one of those weeks where we simply don't know where to turn in gratutude for all the truly unbelievable fundraising efforts that you BRILLIANT supporters are doing to help everyone enjoy the benefits of computer games.

Top men Rod, Simon, Andy, Nick and Nic have run the real Marathon to the Acropolis in Athens, funding the whole trip themselves

"All the locals who asked about our run thought we were barking mad when we told them which route we were taking," said Nick Moglia. "The course was gruelling, with a nine-mile constant climb from sea level to 2,400 ft, but the weather was kind, at least to the end of the run where we were greeted by heavy rain."

"Unlike the original Greek messenger, we all survived and we all successfully completed the run. The only unforeseen incident was when Andy received rather a nasty dog bite after just one mile! We've been overwhelmed by both the messages of support, and the generous donations that we have received on behalf of SpecialEffect."

But that's not all. There's the herculean efforts by Andy and Kirsty Payne, who've masterminded the administration of an incredible games art auction that's raised the awareness of what we're trying to do tenfold.

The two events have raised many thousands of pounds that will go directly towards helping people with disabilities to get back into the game.

And thanks also to DoubleElevenLtd in Newcastle, and the geekpub fraternity in London. They've both ran events this week that have raised hundreds of pounds.

Those are just four wonderful examples. We've been overwhelmed by the drive and generosity of many other people who individually or collectively have given so much in a time of austerity.

It's meant that as a charity we can look to the future and plan more computer games roadshows to hospitals, hospices and organisations. We can plan more support visits to the homes of people across the UK who can't travel to our games centre. And we can buy more equipment to loan to people who don't know where to turn to get a real sense of quality back into their lives.

Thank you - you're all part of the SpecialEffect team.
