Keeping Steve and Joe playing

Gamer brothers Steven and Joe are both in their late teens, have muscular dystrophy, and are mad about playing FIFA and racing games.

The brothers were experts on the Playstation 3 using standard controllers, despite having very little movement in their left hands. However, as their condition advanced, what little movement they had decreased and their mum had to position their hands very carefully on their controllers, a procedure that could take up to half an hour. Given that many other routine activities already took up an increasing number of their waking hours, this was becoming a problem.

Their mum contacted us to see if we could help. We replaced their controllers with separate joysticks and small switches that were much quicker and easier to position and use, and they were back in their element again, thrashing our team on FIFA 13.

We’ll be back to visit Steven and Joe as their needs change. They’re fantastic siblings and very competitive, although remarkably they never play against each other - and don’t want to, either!
