Play FIFA with one button and one joystick

There’s a new One-Button Mode in FIFA19 that lets you play matches using just one joystick and one button. What’s more, it’s available for online play! Let Liz, one of our Occupational Therapists take you through how it works.

Where does the One-Button Mode come from?

It’s a development from FIFA’s Two-Button Mode, which has been in the game since 2010. We’ve made use of it in about 80% of referrals from people with physical disabilities wanting to play the game. Originally dubbed the ‘Dad-Pad’ by the development team, Two-button Mode allows players to compete using just two buttons and the left stick.

EA’s original reason for its inclusion was to increase the general accessibility of the game, making it easy to pick up for people who didn’t want to spend too much time learning the controls. But the mode also opened the door to playing FIFA for thousands of disabled players around the world.

It’s been a game-changer for people like Finlay, a football-mad boy with cerebral palsy who was desperate to play FIFA, but his limited movements meant there was no way he could hold or use a standard controller. Our team set him up with two large button switches and a large sturdy joystick, and he was away.

The inclusion of both modes - which now include online play - is going to to be vital for more people like Fin. We’re already using the One-Button Mode with some of the people we’re seeing!
