GamesAid in £21k boost to our work

We’re very grateful to GamesAid for a donation of over £21k to support our work. We’re one of eight charities to benefit from the £168k raised this year.

Our Founder and CEO, Mick Donegan, said “I would like to thank both UKIE and GamesAid for their support in providing such fertile soil to help SpecialEffect grow from a small, UK-only charity to one that now makes an impact on the lives of disabled gamers all over the world.”

“This is being achieved through, for example, our collaboration with XBox, EA, DoubleFine, Playground Games and many more.”

“Not only this but we've also been able to develop our own games accessibility software, such as our freely downloadable EyeMine, which now gives disabled people all over the world - from Stevenage to Sweden and from Reading to Redmond - the chance to play Minecraft through eye movement alone.”

“Here, for example, is an email about EyeMine from a Dutch Disability Specialist which we received very recently:

‘Today I installed EyeMine on the computer of a client of mine who has a physical disability and is also deaf. He loves watching YouTube videos of other people playing games like Mario and Minecraft but, until today, he wasn’t able to play games himself.  He almost jumped out of his wheelchair out of sheer joy. His twin brother and his younger brother were both were so happy for him and wanted to show him everything they knew in Minecraft. Then they played multiplayer, so all three of them could play on their own computer in the same world.  So we all had a wonderful day today. Thanks for making this possible!’”

“Heartfelt thanks to both UKIE and GamesAid, for playing such a huge part in helping SpecialEffect make all this possible!”

A big thank you also to Andy Payne for nominating us, all the people who voted for us, and all involved in the fundraising.
