GameBlast17 is here!

Gamers across the UK are joining forces to raise money for SpecialEffect this coming weekend in GameBlast17, the UK’s biggest charity gaming event.

Hundreds of gamers will take to their PCs and consoles throughout the weekend of 24-26 February to host marathon livestreams, gaming tournaments and other challenges in support of the charity, which enables anyone, whatever their physical disability, to enjoy video games and leisure technology.

SpecialEffect are aiming to raise £100,000 from the event.

Many companies from the games industry are taking part, including flagship partner GAME Digital plc, who have already been raising funds throughout February via their retail stores. Their GameBlast involvement will culminate in a 24-hour marathon livestream in conjunction with Multiplay, which kicks off with a Breakfast Show Challenge and features an auction of limited edition merch, sports day activities and a series of Guinness World Record attempts along the way.

Joining the GAME and Multiplay teams on the day be will teams from the new BELONG arenas in Hull and Portsmouth, Microsoft’s Graeme Boyd and comedian John Robertson. Developers and publishers such as Ubisoft, SUMO Digital, Wired Productions, Bethesda and Bandai Namco are also offering their support through donations to auctions, versus gaming challenges and more.

Elsewhere, many major names in the video games industry are backing the event with their own livestreams over the weekend, including Ripstone, Rare, SEGA, Nomad and Testology, alongside official partners Twitch, FACEIT, Insert Coin and Ukie. In total over 300 participants have now signed up, ranging from student societies to eSports teams and popular streamers. Even JustGiving, the event’s chosen fundraising platform, have a team taking part.

Tom Donegan, Events Coordinator at SpecialEffect said: “It’s incredible to see how the event has grown over the past four years. GameBlast is a fantastic way for the gaming community to come together and support our work with disabled gamers, which is really close to their hearts. Demand for our services is going up all the time, and the funds raised this weekend will enable us to help more aspiring gamers like Corey ( to experience the magic of games with his friends and family.”
