Finstock GameBlast battles Beast from East

The Beast from the East was no match for Finstock GameBlast last weekend.

4 x 4s, stranded vehicles, tow trucks and the community of Finstock, just a couple of miles from SpecialEffect HQ, braved the Beast from the East to make the show go on! The determined, resourceful team were adamant that no matter what – huge snow drifts, impassable roads – their annual Finstock GameBlast18 would go ahead.

Always arranged a week after our main GameBlast event, thirty or so avid gamers descended upon the Village Hall to play games for 24 hours. Organisers Nick Morley and Chris Owen superbly masterminded the gathering, which has so far raised an incredible £3,250 towards our work.

While Britain shivered outside, the Finstock GameBlasters played a huge range of games from FIFA, GTA and Call of Duty to Overwatch, Elite:Dangerous and Peggle. And parents and children of the village even braved the snow to drop by and support the event, have a go on chin controlled Mario Kart and partake of the fantastic buffet the organisers laid on.

Co-organiser Chris, an avid gamer, had mentioned to our CEO and Founder Dr Mick, that he was gutted to have missed out on earning the limited edition SpecialEffect football kit in FIFA because of family and work commitments at GAME, Witney. Dr Mick was able to ease the blow by presenting Chris with his very own real-life SpecialEffect FIFA shirt which EA had given personally to him, taking the footballing tradition of handing over one’s shirt at full time into the gaming arena!

Dr Mick was philosophical about giving up his treasured shirt "Chris and Nick have done a tremendous job in bringing such a large group of gamers together to raise money for SpecialEffect. The fact that it’s a group of gamers in one of our neighbouring villages is just out of this world and we are so appreciative that this brilliant event has gone ahead despite the weather. Much as I loved my FIFA shirt, it’s gone to a great new home."

Finstock GameBlast co-organiser and Founder, Nick Morley, summed up the spirit of the event ‘We love gaming and we want everyone to enjoy gaming regardless of their physical abilities. We’ve beaten the weather conditions, spent 24 hours playing alongside our friends and had a great time whilst making OUR contribution to help SpecialEffect bring gaming to people with disabilities. That’s awesome. Bring on Finstock GameBlast 19. Good job folks!’
