Darryl and son are gaming together again

Darryl sitting on the floor with his laptray and controllerDarryl’s finally having some quality father and son gaming time with a little help from a SpecialEffect adapted setup.

He had a stroke a few years ago which left him unable to use his right side and struggling to comprehend complex explanations. His wife bought a PS4 last Christmas so he could try to play with his young son, but he struggled with the controller and gave up.

The main issue was one-handed gaming. He was having problems using the sticks and buttons on his PlayStation controller, so our team swapped over the D-pad and face button functions and relabelled them clearly with coloured stickers.

For first-person games the stick functions were remapped as well and the Walk Forward, R1 and R2 functions mapped out to three button switches. Again, clear labelling helped Darryl remember what the buttons do. He sits on the floor to play, so the team fixed the buttons to a velcro tray with a soft cushion underside to make things comfy.

These small changes have meant that Darryl’s started getting back into solo and co-op gaming and spending precious time with his son. Looks like the PS4 was a good investment after all!
