A world's first - creating sculptures with your eyes

Here's the first results from our new EyeSculpture pilot project, which aims to enable people with even the most severe disabilities to create sculpture, just by moving their eyes.

The photo below shows a model created by Alex, a young man with a progressive condition who, even though he can no longer create things with his hands, has 'sculpted' this highly detailed imaginary creature by eye movement alone.

He designed the creature on an eyegaze-enabled computer using Spore, a video game that offers players the ability to create their own onscreen 3D figures. The resulting computer code was processed externally, then printed on a 3D printer.

"The first time I used an eyegaze computer I was awestruck" said Alex. "After a few months of borrowing one through SpecialEffect's loan library, I managed to buy my own and I've been using it ever since."

The CEO of SpecialEffect, Dr Mick Donegan, said "As far as we are aware, this is the first project of its kind. Through our special combination of existing technologies, such as gaze control and 3D printing, we're beginning to enable young people like Alex to release their locked-in talents in brand new ways to enhance the lives of us all."

We'll be releasing more details about the project in the coming months.
